Stetson Kennedy, Beluthahatchee Park
Native-born Jacksonvillian, Stetson Kennedy is an award-winning author, acclaimed folklorist, and activist for both human rights and environmental issues. Palmetto Country, Kennedy’s first book, is known for depicting a clear image of Florida during the first half of the 20th century.
In 1948, Kennedy purchased a 70-acre tract of land and stipulated strict development covenants to preserve much of the land as wildlife refuge. Four acres of that property, including Kennedy’s homestead, are now the Beluthahatchee Park, managed by St Johns County.
